Martin G. Gaughan
CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™
Marty Gaughan, founder and president of Gaughan Capital Management (GCM), didn’t quit his day job when he initially ventured in the world of financial planning. He began his career as a Chicago firefighter in 1990. In his early 30s, recently married with a young family, his financial life grew more complex, and he realized his family needed financial guidance. He sought help answering some basic questions, such as “How much do we really need to retire?” and “What is the best way to save for our children’s future education?” and “What happens to them if something bad happens to me?” Marty knew he needed help, but good and sound financial advice was hard to find.
When you’re a fireman, helping others and putting their needs first is just part of your DNA. As a financial advisor, Marty realized he could help influence lives in a different way, by offering people like himself the financial guidance they needed to create a great life. He continued his education, earned his MBA from DePaul University, then completed a comprehensive financial planning curriculum at the American College and passed the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM (CFP®) certification exam.
Marty started his second career, part-time, at a large well-known firm. He didn’t like it! After a two-year learning experience, Marty decided to start his own firm, so that he could help clients the way he wanted to—with independent and sound financial guidance. What started out as a “side job” helping people answer their major financial questions became Gaughan Capital Management: an independent firm offering the same financial planning and expertise that he originally sought as a young fireman.
Today, as a small business owner, Marty has more than 20 years of experience working with clients from all walks of life:, including other business owners, police and fire retirees, and those preparing for a major life transition. His commitment to the highest fiduciary standards has positioned GCM as a leader in providing independent, financial planning services throughout the Chicagoland area. As a CFP® professional with expertise in retirement income planning, he advises clients on tax-efficient strategies to not only get to retirement but to get through retirement. In working closely with clients, Marty focuses on the importance of living for a comfortable today as well planning for an uncertain tomorrow. He knows, all too well, from his firefighting days, that bad things can happen to good people when they least expect it.
As a licensed real estate professional and investor with more than 30 years of experience, Marty understands that real estate offers opportunities as an additional asset class—potentially increasing returns and lowering portfolio risk. Whether it’s advising clients of the benefits of adding investment real estate to their portfolio or helping with decisions regarding personal real estate in retirement, Marty believes real estate is an important part of the retirement conversation.
While Marty has since retired from the Fire Department due to an injury, he remains close in spirit. Marty frequently presents educational workshops on retirement issues to Chicago police and fire retirees, and his up-close-and-personal understanding of the Deferred Comp and Pension plans has helped many of his clients. Marty has been featured in Chicago magazine, is a member of the Financial Services Institute and the Financial Planning Association, and is licensed to offer life, disability, and long-term care insurance. He has been recognized as a Five Star Professional* from 2013-2016, which awarded to less than 3% of the wealth managers in the Chicago area.
On a more personal note, Marty has been married for 30 years. His wife, Mary, works for the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago. They have three children: Audrey, a graduate of Denison University, works for Northern Trust and is pursuing her MBA at DePaul University; Megan, a graduate of Holy Cross, works for Neuberger Berman and lives in New York City; and Danny, who is now a junior at Marquette University in Milwaukee studying history in the pre-law program. To stay active, Marty enjoys swimming, regular yoga classes, and increasingly frequent hiking trips to our national parks (most recently a trip to Yosemite). For family get- togethers, or just some quiet time, he enjoys going to his Lakehouse in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin. He is a lifelong Chicago sports fan, attending Blackhawk and White Sox games regularly.
Giving back is important to Marty, and he is active in the community and supports numerous charities. He started Over The Edge, a youth basketball program focused on preparing boys and girls to play high school basketball. Marty is also a strong supporter of the Chicago Fire Department Widow’s and Children’s Fund, the 100 Club of Chicago, Ignite The Spirit, Lurie’s Children’s Hospital, and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
